Takeaways from the World Federation for ADHD’s International Consensus Statement 2026
Description

The World Federation of ADHD’s International Consensus Statement was a first-of-its-kind document presenting 208 conclusions based on the most robust evidence available – population-based epidemiologic studies and large-scale meta-analyses -- reviewed by international experts. Since its first publication 5 years ago, considerable new evidence has emerged, warranting this update. This talk will offer the first preview of the updated International Consensus Statement, expected to be published in early 2027, which reflects the current state of the science in ADHD. This extensive summary of the world scientific literature helps refute misconceptions and stigma around the disorder.

More than 200 empirically-supported statements generated from eligible studies were approved by over 100 international experts. These statements offer an up-to-date understanding of the most robust findings in the areas of prevalence, genetic and environmental influences on ADHD, comorbidities, cognitive differences, functional outcomes, and treatments for the disorder. Many of the conclusions of the original Consensus Statement are supported, but this update adds important nuance to some findings as a result of more recent evidence. It also highlights a few areas in which the balance of findings has shifted in the last 5 years, providing a transparent overview of the current scientific state of the field.
