Beyond Boilerplate: Designing Student-Centered Accommodations That Actually Work
Description
As Ross Greene reminds us, “kids do well if they can.” Yet many schools continue to rely on a standardized, “boilerplate” list of accommodations, such as extra time or preferential seating, that often fail to address the specific executive function challenges students with ADHD experience. When accommodations fail to meet individual needs, students continue to struggle while parents and educators grow increasingly frustrated. In this session, participants will learn how to evaluate and redesign supports to better align with students’ individual needs. Two ADHD student coaches will share real-world case examples of students whose needs were not met by commonly used accommodations and the more individualized, student-centered supports that ultimately proved effective both in the classroom and at home. Participants will be introduced to the “Beyond Boilerplate Accommodations” framework, a structured, collaborative process for identifying when accommodations are not working and redesigning them to better address the development of underlying executive function skills. We will engage in guided examples to practice applying the framework to real-world scenarios. Attendees will leave with practical strategies, concrete examples, and tools to support more effective, student-centered accommodations.
