Understanding IDEA and 504: A Parent's Advocacy Toolkit
Description
This session is designed to help parents of children with ADHD move from confusion to confidence when it comes to their legal rights in the school system. Drawing on the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, participants will learn what these laws actually require schools to do — and how to hold them accountable. We will walk through the differences between IEPs and 504 Plans, covering eligibility, the evaluation process, and the accommodations and modifications most beneficial for students with ADHD — such as extended time, preferential seating, organizational supports, and assistive technology and some less common supports also available once you understand the guidelines.. Recent legal developments and case studies will be used to ground these concepts in real outcomes for real families. Parents will leave with practical, ready-to-use advocacy tools: how to request an evaluation, what to say in a meeting, how to document concerns, and how to navigate pushback from school personnel.
