When ADHD Grows Older: Memory and Executive Function Across Time
Description
Is it ADHD? Is it aging? Or is it something more serious? In later life, these questions can be difficult to untangle. What if memory changes are not only about aging? Even though ADHD can persist across the lifespan and shape how cognitive changes are experienced, it is not always considered in this context. This session explores how ADHD intersects with memory and executive function in older adulthood. Drawing on current research, it examines what is known, what remains unclear, and why interpretation is often challenging. Research suggests differences in attention, memory, and processing speed in older adults with ADHD, though findings are mixed and do not point to a single profile. The session also addresses how concerns, such as forgetfulness or difficulty following through, can reflect different underlying processes, including ADHD, aging, or emerging cognitive conditions. Emerging research further suggests that age-related brain changes may have a greater impact on cognition in individuals with ADHD, even when those changes are not more severe. Overall, this session offers a practical, evidence-informed framework for understanding cognitive changes in later life, with an approach that considers ADHD alongside aging and other factors.
