Beyond Interest & Urgency: Helping ADHD Clients Achieve Long-term Goals
Description
Supporting clients to locate their own sources of motivation is one of the most pressing challenges in ADHD coaching. While the field has made great strides in normalizing the ADHD experience, coaches frequently face a harder question: what do we actually do when clients struggle to move forward? This session explores the neurobiology of ADHD motivation — specifically, why the interest-based nervous system creates real obstacles to pursuing long-term goals — and offers a framework for working with it rather than against it. Drawing on recent research into the role of context and environment in effective ADHD management, the session makes the case for helping clients intentionally shape the conditions in which they can thrive. Through compelling client stories, attendees will see these challenges come to life and witness real paths toward resolution. The presenter introduces three often-overlooked "super tools" — context, curiosity, and creativity — with practical examples of how each can help clients access their own motivation, alongside an honest look at where pitfalls may arise. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of the ADHD motivation system, concrete strategies to apply immediately, and a renewed sense of what's possible when coaches skillfully support clients toward self-directed action.
