Name
The EMPATH Method for Taming Big Emotions
Description
Emotional dysregulation can be one of the most challenging aspects of ADHD, and for many families, it is what feels hardest to manage day to day. Big emotions in children often show up as overreaction, refusal, or defiance. In response, adults may turn to logic, consequences, or problem solving, yet these approaches tend to backfire when a child is emotionally flooded and temporarily unable to access the brain regions responsible for reasoning. Parents often feel frustrated and unsure about how to best respond.
This session introduces the Be An EMPATH Method, a practical, neuroscience informed six step framework that helps adults de escalate emotionally charged moments, provide the right support at the right time, and build children’s emotion regulation skills over time. Participants will also learn Cope Out Loud, a modeling strategy that makes adult coping visible by narrating regulated responses in real time.
Through real-world vignettes and brief guided practice, participants will leave feeling more confident navigating meltdowns and better equipped to create conditions for regulation, learning, and accountability.
